The 287 foot freighter Eagle was originally named the Aaron K and was used to transport scrap paper between Miami and South America. In 1985 a fire spread through her electrical system, and the insurance company declared the vessel a total loss. The ship was docked in the Miami River until October of 1985 when a group of local divers, dive shops and a combination of the Monroe County Tourist Council, the Artificial Reef Committee and some local businesses raised $10,000 to purchase and clean the vessel. On December 19, 1985, the Miami and Dade County Bomb Squad set explosives that sent the ship to the bottom in 90 seconds. She now rests on her starboard side with her bow pointing towards shore in 120 feet of water on a sand bottom. Her cargo bays act like caverns with schools of fish swimming in an out of them. There is usually a slight current over this wreck, and visibility ranges from 50 to 100 feet. Remember penetration into any shipwreck should only be done by those with proper training, experience and wreck diving equipment. Scuba equipment like powerful dive lights, navigation reels, dive knives as well as redundant air supply like a pony bottle or doubles are standard gear for wreck divers.
